ALLENS SEED GRASS SEEDS

Blending grass seed to our customer's requirements is a specialty with us.

RYE GRASSES were brought to the USA from Europe and ryegrass seeds are planted throughout the country as lawn, pasture and turf. These bunch grasses have two basic types; annual and perennial. Each type is planted as a pure strain or used in mixtures depending on the specific lawn, pasture or turf use desired. Do not confuse these two kinds as being the same. Perennial is a permanent lawn choice in cooler climate areas, and annual is seeded yearly and lives for one season as a winter rye grass.

Ryegrasses, both annual and perennial, can be grown in the northern states for lawns. In many areas, largely because these grasses are so versatile, they are incorporated into seeding mixtures with other grasses.

FESCUE GRASSES are cool season grasses that are adapted to the transition zone and into Canada . The fescue species are easily seeded and include the sub species of tall bunching grasses named tall fescue and fine shorter fescues named creeping red , hard fescue , chewings fescue and sheep fescue . Fescue grass varieties are drought tolerant and thus eco friendly.

Unlike the majority of cool season grasses, Fescue grasses are shade tolerant and perform well in the lower areas of the transitions zone where the season is too hot for the other cool grasses and in the area of the transition zone that is too cold in the winter for the warm season grasses.

Fescue grass seed are also found in many seed blends with grasses such as Kentucky Bluegrass and Ryegrass varieties.

All of the fescue grass varieties share the same variety characteristics. The three dominant ones being shade tolerance, staying green all year, and having very good drought resistance. Fine Fescues are more cold and shade tolerant than Tall Fescue, but both are used through-out much of the Central to Northern USA states.

BLUEGRASS Note: (See images for Bluegrasses) Kentucky Bluegrass is a cool season lawn grass. Bluegrasses can be planted from seeds or sodded and is one of the most popular turfgrass lawns in Northern America. Bluegrasses require medium amounts of lawn care and make beautiful home and sports grasses.

Kentucky Bluegrass is a cool season, perennial ground cover; forming a beautiful, high quality, dense sod when grown in pure stands. Grass color ranges from bright green to deep bluish green.

Bluegrass is often used in low to medium traffic areas and often incorporated with other grass species to produce a better multi-purpose lawn.

BENTGRASS   ( Agrostis ) is a large genus with over 100 species, but only about four are used for turfgrass in the United States. (Argostis) is a large genus with 100 species, but only about four are used for turf grass in N. America. Of the four species used for turf, creeping bentgrass is the one most commonly used on golf greens. The only use of this species in the South is for golf course putting greens where environments are closely managed.

Throughout the New England States and the Pacific Northwest where climatic conditions are ideal for bentgrass, the species is used for lawns, athletic fields and golf courses. In Europe and parts of Asia, the grass is native and commonly found on lawns, pastures and sport fields.

Creeping bentgrass ( Agrostis palustris ) is a perennial cool season grass that forms a dense mat. The grass spreads by profuse creeping stolons and possesses rather vigorous, shallow roots. Stems (stolons) are decumbent (creeping) and slender and produce long narrow leaves. Leaf blades are smooth on the upper surface and ridged on the underside, 1 to 3 mm wide and bluish green in appearance. The ligule is long, membranous, finely toothed or entire and rounded, auricles are absent.

The species is characterized by single flowered spikelets in a compact panicle. The panicle in flower is purple to bronze in appearance. Seed of creeping bentgrass are too small to be identified without magnification. Seeds are ovate, less than 1 mm long, usually awnless with an occasional short, straight awn and silvery in appearance.

Creeping bentgrass is adapted to cool, humid environments such as those found in the northeastern United States. Cool nighttime temperatures are particularly advantageous to bentgrass. High daytime temperatures together with warm nighttime temperatures create highly adverse conditions for bentgrass. During summer months in the South, carbohydrate reserves are depleted in bentgrass and the turf becomes susceptible to any additional stress - drought, traffic, shade, insects or disease.

FORAGE grasses include native grasses for pasture, grazing, and hay crops. Perennial pasture grasses are included in this summary because of the vast acreages of land that are not well-suited for row crops but are very important in the total agricultural economy. Forage grasses are subdivided into to cool-season and warm-season grasses.
